Red Wings win playoff opener

OTTAWA -- Jimmy Haynes continued his domination of the Ottawa Lynx last night, leading the Rochester Red Wings to a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of the best-of-five International League East playoff series.

Haynes pitched six shutout innings but was charged with two runs after leaving in the seventh. Ottawa rallied from a 5-0 deficit, but Jimmy Myers picked up the save with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The series resumes tonight at Ottawa Stadium.

Haynes had a streak of 15 1/3 scoreless innings against the Lynx until Mike Oquist gave up a two-run double to Rafael Bournigal in the seventh.

The Lynx could face Orioles right-hander Ben McDonald, on a rehabilitation assignment, in Game 4.

"I don't think McDonald could be any better than Haynes was today," said Lynx manager Pete Mackanin.
