VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

September 03, 1995|By Kevin Harrison

The volunteer: Cindy Beck has been a volunteer "lay therapist" with the Child Abuse Prevention Center of Maryland for four years.

Mrs. Beck, a resident of Arnold and a graduate of Severna Park High School, majored in psychology at the University of Maryland.

A loan specialist with Country Wide Mortgage, she also works part time as a treatment counselor at Psychotherapeutic Treatment Services in Annapolis, dealing with adults. Her husband, Jim, also is a counselor there.

The organization: The Child Abuse Prevention Center of Maryland, with an office in Baltimore, is planning to open a satellite office in Anne Arundel County.

The center emphasizes two approaches to abuse prevention: lay therapy, in which volunteers work one-on-one with at-risk

families, and the Positive Parenting Program, which teaches child-raising skills.

Volunteer's comments: "Families come to us through Social Services. They feel they need someone to come in and help them . . . someone to talk to, a friend, a positive role model. Right now I'm working with a mother who has three children.

"By the time you've finished your year or 14 months with a family, you actually see what you've given them and see what you've given to yourself. You learn a whole heck of a lot. The experience and education is great.

"The first time you meet the family, you talk to them and assess what's going on [and] set up a treatment plan.

"You do become friends. I mean, you have to. They trust you to come into their home.

"What the center is trying to do, is get the word out, that this organization does exist and that they need volunteers. They really have good resources.

"I've had a very rewarding four years with this organization. It's something that more people ought to come to see what it's all about.

Information: The center has scheduled a 14-hour program from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 14 and 15 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 to train volunteers to work with families.
