Division prediction

The 49ers will use the season to prepare for their NFC title match with the Cowboys. The Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints will fight for second, and the St. Louis Rams and the Carolina Panthers will bring up the rear.

1. San Francisco 49ers

1994 record: 13-3, won division and Super Bowl.

Coach: George Seifert (84-24)

Key additions: S Marquez Pope, RB Ricky Ervins and WR J. J. Stokes.

Key losses: RB Ricky Watters, RB Dexter Carter, FB Marc Logan, Dana Hall and P Klaus Wilmsmeyer.

Strengths: Steve Young will again be throwing to Jerry Rice. As long as they're healthy, the 49ers are one of the best teams -- if not the best -- in the league. Dana Stubblefield and Bryant Young -- overshadowed by Deion Sanders last year -- spearhead

the defense.

Weaknesses: The loss of Watters leaves them without a proven running back, and even if they sign Sanders, they won't have him for virtually the entire season the way they did last year.

Extra point: Have you ever heard of Derek Loville? If the 49ers repeat, you will. He's being counted on to replace Watters.
