Hits And Misses

September 01, 1995|By Brad Snyder

On the field: Home plate umpire Don Denkinger left the game after a second-inning play at the plate. Denkinger injured his knee, hearing it pop, getting into position to call out Craig Paquette for running out of the baseline on a suicide squeeze play. The crew worked with three umpires the rest of the game.

In the dugout: Orioles manager Phil Regan started Jeff Huson at third base. Huson walked, scored two runs, singled twice and made two nice plays in the field.

In the clubhouse: Regan, who has a sign on his desk that says "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity," expounded on his beliefs about bad luck: "I think a guy can get into a bad habit of saying, when things go badly, that he's unlucky," Regan said. "I don't like to think I'm unlucky, myself."
