Douglas Alan Stegmeyer, 43, a bass guitarist and former leader of Billy Joel's band, apparently shot himself to death in his Long Island, N.Y., apartment Thursday night, police and friends said. "I am just in shock," Billy Joel said. "He was a very talented player. He was with me from the 1970s through 1988 and was the leader of the nucleus of the group that was the band. We called him the Sergeant-at-Arms. He was so committed to what he was doing."
Cleveland Robinson, 80, a veteran labor official and civil rights advocate, died Wednesday of kidney failure in the Bronx, N.Y. A former adviser on labor to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Mr. Robinson was chairman of the New York State Martin Luther King Jr. Commission at his death.
John S. Badeau, 92, an engineer, educator and ordained minister who was U.S. ambassador to Cairo from 1961 to 1964, died Friday at a retirement community in Jamesburg, N.J.
