September 01, 1995

A Ferndale man was in serious but stable condition yesterday at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after he struck two cables while riding a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle Wednesday, county police said.

According to police, Steven Michael Andrews, 23, of the 6400 block of Continental Court, was riding the vehicle in a field next to Heathwood Road in Ferndale about 6:30 p.m. when he hit two cables connecting a fence.

The vehicle broke the bottom cable and the top cable hit Mr. Andrews across the chest, knocking him off and cracking his ribs, police said.

Mr. Andrews was taken by ambulance to North Glen Elementary School in the 600 block of Furnace Branch Road, then by state police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
