'Yankee' the choice at Rosecroft

August 26, 1995|By Special to The Sun

FORT WASHINGTON -- Electric Yankee, a 2-year-old colt with strong Maryland connections, is the 5-2 favorite for the richest race of the year at Rosecroft Raceway, tonight's $133,448 Wayne Smullin Memorial Pace Final.

Electric Yankee, a son of Jate Lobell, is driven by Rosecroft regular John Wagner and is owned by the Keller and Bittle families of Frederick. Electric Yankee last week came within 2/5 of a second of the divisional track record when he won in 1:54.

Also pacing in 1:54 last week was Bull Hanover, who will have to overcome the outside post nine for trainer/driver Bruce Riegle. The other main contender is Sports Town, whose driver, Richie Silverman, won this race in 1990, and whose trainer, Tom Artandi, took the trophy the next two years.

The Smullin will be the seventh race on Rosecroft's card tonight, with a scheduled post time of 9:50. The race, and the entire Rosecroft card, can also be seen at all wagering sites throughout Maryland.
