Even better, school administrators said the scores -- an average of 438 on the verbal portion and 503 on the mathematics portion -- were the highest they've been for county students in 15 years.

The average verbal score for county students has risen 13 points in the past five years, while the average mathematics score has risen 20 points.

The statewide average score on the verbal section of the SAT was 430 points, while the statewide average on the mathematics section was 479.
