Shaw spans 50 states to give self constant variety of marathons

RUNNING

Baltimore-area runners probably best know Clay Shaw as the longtime director of the White Rose and Bon-Ton 5-milers in York, Pa., races that draw the likes of Olympic marathoner Steve Spence and Olympic hopeful Keith Dowling.

But Shaw, 43, has covered some ground of his own as a runner. A little over a month ago, he finished ninth in a marathon in Oklahoma City and the following week he completed the Steamboat Marathon in Colorado. That means that he has finished marathons in each of the 50 states, in addition to the District of Columbia.

"I had to do them back-to-back," Shaw says about the Oklahoma and Colorado marathons. "When I went to Nova Scotia last year, I broke my heel. I went to Oklahoma but had to drop out. I knew then that it was going to be back-to-back this year."

He began his marathon odyssey in 1979, when he ran the San Francisco Marathon in July. He also completed the Harrisburg Marathon and the now-defunct Maryland Marathon that year.

Along the way, he has recorded a personal record of 2 hours, 55 minutes in the Philadelphia Marathon and the Jim Thorpe Marathon in Carlisle, Pa.

Shaw, who has overseen the White Rose Five-Miler for 17 years and the Bon-Ton for 16, also has run in four marathons in the Canadian provinces and recorded an overall PR of 2:53 in the Manitoba Marathon.

"I'm going to Saskatchewan in September for the Saskatoon Marathon. That'll be my fifth in the provinces," says Shaw, who will direct a point-to-point "Marathon of the Roses" from York to Lancaster, Pa., in September 1996. "The farther north I go the better."
