A 20-year-old Abingdon man is free on his own recognizance after being arrested by Bel Air police Aug. 8 on charges of forging and cashing his father's checks and taking his father's car to Canada, police said.

Jeremy Paul Rualo of the 200 block of Ellerslie Court in Abingdon was detained in Niagara, N.Y., on July 27, when -- during a routine border check -- officials discovered he was wanted in Bel Air on charges that included theft, forgery and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, said John Harkins, deputy chief of the Bel Air Police Department.

Mr. Rualo is accused of stealing at least six of his father's checks and then forging and cashing them in Bel Air for about $4,000, Chief Harkins said.

According to police, he left Bel Air with his girlfriend July 26 in his father's white 1992 Nissan Sentra, after his father confronted him about the stolen checks.

Rather than fight extradition, Mr. Rualo voluntarily returned to Bel Air on Aug. 8, Chief Harkins said.
