Cohen becomes head of state CPA group

Baltimore CPA Jacob J. Cohen, audit director at Walpert, Smullian & Blumenthal, took the helm of the 9,500-member Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants on July 1.

Among issues of interest to Mr. Cohen is the growing need for CPAs to provide more business consulting and less traditional CPA services over the next decade.

Mr. Cohen, who is a member of numerous professional organizations, served on a state task force that produced regulations mandating minimum yearly continuing education requirements for CPAs for license renewal. Mike Piday, owner/manager of Dunkin Donuts in Hagerstown, has received the Arc of Maryland Outstanding Employer of the Year Award.

Mr. Piday employs three people with developmental disabilities in his Washington County shop and has been involved with supported employment for people with mental retardation since 1990.

Mr. Piday received the award during The Arc of Maryland's 37th Annual Convention at Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City in June.

The Arc of Maryland, a volunteer organization of people with mental retardation, parents, relatives, educators and professionals, was founded in 1950 to help improve the lives of mentally retarded children and adults.

Lieman named to panel for CPA conference

Ellin & Tucker, Chartered, a certified public accounting firm in Baltimore, announced the appointment of Jeffrey Lieman to the steering committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' 15th Annual Microcomputer Technology Conference -- MICROS '96.

Baltimore is the site of the conference, and Mr. Lieman will serve as representative from the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Mr. Lieman, a CPA, is a principal in the accounting, audit and consulting department of Ellin & Tucker, where he heads the firm's Technology Services Group.

Orenstein on board of back pain group

Jeffrey M. Orenstein, a litigation associate with the Baltimore law firm Adelberg, Rudow, Dorf, Hendler & Semeth, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Back Pain Association of America, based in Baltimore.

A nonprofit organization, the Back Pain Association of America supports research for the treatment and cure of diseases and conditions of the spine.

Taylor to serve on banking committee

Billy Taylor, assistant vice president and compliance officer at Hagerstown Trust, will serve as the 1995-1996 chairman of the State Compliance Committee of the Maryland Bankers Association.

The committee reviews existing and future bank compliance laws and issues, plans educational opportunities and assists compliance officers statewide.
