Man steals nearly $6,000 from restaurant office

July 26, 1995

A man walked into an unlocked office of a Riva restaurant Monday morning and walked out with a cash bag containing nearly $6,000, county police said.

Mike Piera, 69, the owner of Mike's Crab House in the 3000 block of Old Riva Road, reported the theft about 10:30 a.m.

Mr. Piera said that he left his business about 9 a.m. and returned at 10 a.m., when he discovered the bag filled with $5,824 was missing from a desk drawer in the office, police said.

Mr. Piera's wife, Kathy, was making a sandwich for a customer about 9:30 a.m. when a man came in and walked toward the rear of the store, where the office and sodas are located.

The man came back and placed a 2-liter bottle of Diet Coke and two $1 bills on the counter. Mrs. Piera told the man she would be with him in a moment and returned to help the other customer.

When she turned around, the man was gone but the soda and the money were still on the counter, police said.
