Hits And Misses

July 22, 1995|By Buster Olney

On the field: Mike Oquist pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief of Jamie Moyer, allowing two hits and walking one, as he picked up his second victory of the year. Jesse Orosco and Doug Jones combined to pitch the last two innings.

In the dugout: The Kansas City offense is to baseball what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense has been to football over the years. Therefore, when the Royals got back-to-back singles to open the game against Moyer, Kansas City manager Bob Boone ordered No. 3 hitter Greg Gagne to drop a sacrifice bunt. Both runners eventually scored.

In the clubhouse: "Your farm system, to me, does not always mean getting all your guys playing in the major leagues. . . .I think you can use those players to make trades." -- Orioles manager Phil Regan
