Boston Red Sox -- Requested that pitching coach John Cumberland take a leave of absence and announced that Al Nipper will assume the duties of pitching coach.

California Angels -- Activated DH Chili Davis from the 15-day DL. Placed P Mike Bielecki on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 17.

Chicago White Sox -- Purchased the contract of P Dave Righetti from Triple-A Nashville. Traded OF Warren Newson to the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named.

Cincinnati Reds -- Optioned P C. J. Nitkowski to Triple-A Indianapolis. Recalled P Johnny Ruffin from Indianapolis.

Montreal Expos -- Designated P Luis Aquino for assignment. Purchased the contract of P Willie Fraser from Triple-A Ottawa.

New York Yankees -- Recalled P Brian Boehringer from Triple-A Columbus, and then returned him to Columbus. Optioned P Dave Pavlas to Columbus. Recalled P Joe Ausanio from Columbus.

Oakland Athletics -- Recalled P Steve Wojciechowski from Triple-A Edmonton. Optioned P Scott Baker to Edmonton.
