BWI gets funds for de-icing facility

Gov. Parris N. Glendening has approved spending $1.9 million of federal money to build a de-icing facility for commuter and general aviation aircraft at the Baltimore/Washington International Airport.

It will be built at the south end of the main runway for commuter and general aviation aircraft and include an underground drainage system and storage units. Construction will begin this summer and is to be completed by the winter.

The new facility complements one completed recently for commercial jets. Both projects will improve air safety by placing de-icing activities closer to the ends of runways, BWI officials said.
