Summer series to feature concerts and dances

Lots of music-, art- and mind-enhancement activities are scheduled this week in central Carroll County.

Grab a cup of coffee, pick up a pen and open your calendar.

Tonight, Common Ground On The Hill at Western Maryland College will start a two-week summer course series featuring concerts and dances.

This week's focus is "Traditions in Black and White," offering discussion topics as well as course work on traditional instruments and singing.

This evening at 8 o'clock in Baker Chapel, Ira Zepp will present a talk on Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement.

A concert of songs on faith, freedom and struggle will follow.

The cost is $7 per person.

Tomorrow evening at 8 o'clock in Baker Chapel, Sparky Rucker will present Blue and Gray in Black and White. This program focuses on the black Civil War experience.

Music and dance will be the finale of the presentation. The cost is also $7 per person.

An open jam with instructors and students will start at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Decker Student Center. The cost is $5 per person.

A Roots and Rhythm Dance performance featuring African-American dance by Kevin Campbell and Sylvia Hall will begin at 8 p.m. in Baker Memorial Chapel on Thursday. Clogging and a jazz set also will be presented to end the performance.

The cost is $10 per person.

A concert scheduled for 8 p.m. in front of the library will highlight the Friday evening course. A diverse group of artists will perform.

In case of rain, the concert will be held in the old gym. The cost is $10 per person.

Joyce Guerrieri will exhibit her works in Carroll County Arts Council Gallery in the Winchester Exchange Building in Westminster.

Ms. Guerrieri, a collage artist from White Hall in Baltimore County, opened her show over the weekend.

The show, which features a mixture of cut-out images, will be open to the public during gallery operating hours through July 29.

The gallery is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Central Maryland Red Cross is accepting applications for its Aug. 5 cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid courses at Carroll County Emergency Operations Center.

Community CPR teaches emergency action principles, rescue breathing, choking procedures and one-rescuer adult, infant and child CPR. Cost is $33 per person and the course will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Adult CPR teaches emergency action principles, rescue breathing, choking procedures and one-rescuer CPR for adults. Cost is $30 and the course will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Community First Aid and Safety teaches adult, infant and child CPR certification and covers first aid, safety and CPR in community and family settings.

Cost is $38 per person and the course will run from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Registration deadline for all courses is Saturday.

Bear Branch Nature Center will offer two planetarium shows at PTC 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the center north of Westminster.

The program is recommended for ages 7 to adult.

The fee for the program is $2

for nonmembers and $1 for members.

Swing Central will perform unday at 7 p.m. in Westminster City Park as part of the "Month of Sundays Summer Concert Series."

The concert is sponsored by Pizza Hut of Maryland Inc. and is presented by Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks and Westminster City Recreation and a variety of private companies and community organizations.

Each concert is free.

In lieu of an admission fee, concert-goers are asked to bring canned foods and other goods to the performance. These items will be collected by representatives of Human Services Programs of Carroll County Inc. for distribution to the county's needy families.

Swing Central uses state of the art sound equipment to produce a blend of swing jazz, romantic melodies and dance tunes.

Swing Central has performed for audiences at Harborplace, Mardi Gras, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the National Aquarium and the Maryland Wine Festival.

Wilhelm Ltd. Caterers will offer a selection of food and beverages from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
