Sheriff warns residents about purse thefts

Sheriff Joseph P. Meadows has issued a warning to residents about purse snatchers.

Since Jan. 1, more than 60 incidents of purse theft have been reported to the sheriff's office. The majority occurred in shopping centers, mainly the result of carelessness on the part of the victim, he said.

Purse snatchers usually watch potential victims, waiting for them to take credit cards and cash out of their purses in a store. Once the thieves know what is in a purse, they usually strike quickly, most of the time too quickly for the victim to be able to provide an accurate description, authorities said.

Purse snatching is also dangerous because victims have a tendency to resist. None of the incidents this year involved violence, police said, but violence can come into play if the victims resist.

Inspectors commend detention center's staff

Maryland's Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services found no major deficiencies in Harford County Detention Center during its last inspection and commended the staff for adopting all or part of previous recommendations by the department's Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards.

The commission's report was a review of all aspects of the facility, including staff, programs and inmate population, based on an audit of the detention center from March 14 to 16. The majority of identified deficiencies dealt with the documentation of inspections.

Wallis reappointed to stadium authority

Gov. Parris N. Glendening announced that W. Robert Wallis, former editor of the Aegis, will serve another term on the Maryland Stadium Authority.

Mr. Wallis, who has been a member since 1987, was involved when the authority took on the tasks of building Oriole Park at Camden Yards and expanding the convention center.

Mr. Wallis was editor of the Aegis for 38 years. He also was president of the Harford Baseball League, a semi-pro league in Harford and Cecil counties and Wilmington, Del. His new term is effective immediately.
