Another official leaving Schmoke administration

July 06, 1995|By From Staff Reports

Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke's liaison with the City Council and state legislature has become the second high-ranking administration official in the past two months to announce his departure.

Peter N. Marudas, Mr. Schmoke's executive assistant for intergovernmental relations since the mayor took office in 1987, is leaving city government to become chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes of Maryland.

In late May, City Solicitor Neal M. Janey announced that he was leaving his job as the city's top lawyer after the Sept. 12 Democratic primary to join the Baltimore law firm of Miles & Stockbridge.

Mr. Marudas' last day in his $86,600-a-year job will be tomorrow. He will start work for Mr. Sarbanes, for whom he worked for 16 years before joining the mayor's staff, at the end of the month.

Mr. Marudas, 57, is taking over for Marvin "Bud" Moss, who retired last month after serving on Mr. Sarbanes' staff for nine years.

"Going back to Washington, I can pursue the things we're collectively concerned about," Mr. Marudas said yesterday, citing congressional efforts to dismantle the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Among his achievements were helping to get the state to take over the operation of the Baltimore City Community College and Baltimore City Jail, Mr. Marudas said.

He lauded Mr. Schmoke as a "bold and innovative leader."

Asked whether his leaving in the midst of the mayor's campaign for a third term would strike some as unusual, Mr. Marudas replied: "It may. But Congress has got a lot of important things going on. And my immediate duties were completed once the council concluded its session."

Before going to work on Capitol Hill in 1971, Mr. Marudas was the top aide to Baltimore mayors Theodore R. McKeldin and Thomas J. D'Alesandro III.
