2-car accident in Glenwood injures 5

July 05, 1995

Five people were injured -- and four remained hospitalized yesterday -- after a Saturday morning accident between two minivans on Route 97 in Glenwood.

Lawrence Pendelton of the 2000 block of Little Haven Court in Olney was driving his Plymouth minivan north on Route 97 between Roxbury Road and Jennings Chapel Road about 8 a.m. Saturday. He crossed the center line and hit a Mazda minivan driven by Andrew Hovanec of the 5200 block of Stone Mill Court in Sykesville, police said.

Mr. Hovanec's wife, Linda, and two children, Brenda and Andrew, also were in the minivan when it was hit head-on, police said.

As of last night, Mr. Hovanec was reported in serious condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Mrs. Hovanec was reported in fair condition at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. Brenda, 14, was in critical condition and Andrew, 9, was treated and released at Washington, D.C., Children's Hospital.

Mr. Pendelton was listed in critical condition at Suburban Hospital.

Police officials said they believe speed was a factor in the accident.
