God

For all the history of grief

An empty doorway and

a maple leaf.

--Macleish

For all the history of love,

a boy's hand waving

$ in a baseball glove.

on the side of a truck,

two foot letters in faded

orange,

startle me at the stop light.

Evangelism on wheels, like

blood

and books and meals? Then I

see

the smaller print: Guaranteed

Overnight Delivery. Ah --

the world is fallen indeed,

for even summer sun's rising,

though probable, can't be

guaranteed,

nor human breath, when

# night delivers day.
