R.I. man arrested on drug charges

June 28, 1995

County police arrested a Rhode Island man on drug charges early Monday after the truck he was driving swerved off Central Avenue.

Southern District Officer Robert Novotny stopped the 1987 Bronco shortly before 2 a.m. near Brick Church Road.

After the driver passed the sobriety test, Officer Novotny asked him, "Is there anything in the vehicle I need to know about, such as guns, drugs, dead bodies or weapons?" police said.

The man answered no and allowed the officer to search the vehicle.

The patrolman found a pipe and a small wooden box, each with marijuana residue, on the console; five pipes in a fanny pack on the floor beneath the passenger seat; another pipe and two small bags of marijuana in a backpack behind the driver's seat; and a third bag of marijuana behind the front passenger seat. He also found a pipe on the driver.

The marijuana field tested positive, police said.

Kurt Joseph Kovolyan, 23, of Barrington, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
