Detroit Tigers -- Placed P Sean Bergman on the 15-day DL. Purchased the contract of OF Joe Hall from Triple-A Toledo.

Houston Astros -- Activated IF Andy Stankiewicz from the DL. Assigned OF Mike Brumley outright to Triple-A Tucson.

Minnesota Twins -- Sold the contract of OF Bernardo Brito to Nippon of the Japanese League. Purchased the contract of P Greg W. Harris from rookie-league Fort Myers. Announced that P Vince Horsman cleared waivers and was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Placed P Vincente Palacios on the 15-day DL. Activated P Danny Jackson from the DL.

College

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference -- Announced Marist and Rider will become members by the 1997-98 season.

California -- Basketball G K. J. Roberts announced he will transfer to UC-Riverside.

Maryland -- Named Danita DeHaney associate director of athletics.
