BFC's Wilson claimed on waivers by Memphis

Walter Wilson, who helped the Baltimore Football Club reach the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup game last year with some outstanding play at wide receiver, now belongs to the Memphis Mad Dogs.

Wilson, a Baltimore native, was claimed yesterday after Baltimore placed him on waivers.

"This gives Walter a place to play. Obviously, he is a good football player," said Jim Popp, Baltimore's assistant general manager. "But we have a guy at the position he plays who is doing extremely well, and we can't play both of them at the same time."

That other guy is rookie Shannon Culver, who battled Wilson throughout training camp, then moved ahead of him after Wilson sat out Baltimore's exhibition opener against Ottawa with a groin injury. Wilson returned in Saturday's exhibition game against Birmingham, but hurt his shoulder after making a leaping catch in the first quarter.

That turned out to be Wilson's last play in a Baltimore uniform. Culver then solidified his roster spot with an excellent performance against Birmingham. He caught six passes for 69 yards and a touchdown, and threw a key block for slot back Chris Armstrong on another touchdown play.

Wilson, who was unavailable for comment, started 17 games for Baltimore last year and caught 50 passes for 900 yards -- second on the team.

Wilson, 28, starred at Southern High before becoming East Carolina's career leader in receptions (91), yards (1,690) and touchdowns (19). He was taken by the San Diego Chargers in the third round of the 1990 NFL draft and played in 14 games that year. San Diego waived him the next year.

After unsuccessful NFL tryouts with Miami in 1992 and Tampa Bay in 1993, Wilson was released by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers early in last year's CFL camp before he signed with Baltimore.
