Hits And Misses

June 24, 1995|By Buster Olney

On the field: Cal Ripken drove home Brady Anderson with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, the 1,209th RBI of his career. That enabled Ripken to pass former Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner and move into 89th all-time for career RBIs.

In the dugout: Orioles manager Phil Regan said that Jimmy Myers and Armando Benitez, called up from Triple-A Rochester after Thursday's game, would be used in middle relief. The Orioles will have to go without a true long reliever in the next few days, because Mike Oquist likely is joining the rotation, and the other pitchers in the bullpen have typically been used about an inning at a time.

In the clubhouse: "The guys were in a good mood before the game, real upbeat. . . . The new players seemed to fit in all right and I didn't think it was necessary." -- Regan, on why he decided not to call a team meeting.
