On the field: Chris Hoiles broke out of a 1-for-21 slump, homering off Sterling Hitchcock in the fourth inning and singling off Bob Wickman in the seventh.

In the dugout: Manager Phil Regan changed made some last-minute changes in his lineup last night. He removed Leo Gomez as the designated hitter the eighth spot and replaced him with ninth hitter Manny Alexander. He led off with Brady Anderson instead of Curtis Goodwin and put Goodwin in the ninth hole. Anderson walked and doubled and Goodwin and Alexander each singled and stole a base.

In the clubhouse: Regan, before the game, on Arthur Rhodes, who lasted 4 2/3 innnings and got no decision: "I want him to pitch well. If he pitches well, then he stays here."
