A man and woman from eastern Baltimore County were injured in an after-hours accident Sunday night at Rocks Run Mill in Susquehanna State Park, the park manager said.

Christopher Brian Reinthaler, 25, of Dundalk and Patricia Waldmann, 24, of Sparrows Point apparently scaled a fence to gain access to the mill's steel water wheel, said Ranger Rick Smith, the manager of the Havre de Grace area park.

Mr. Reinthaler told rangers they were walking inside the wheel, which is about 30 feet in diameter, and got it spinning too fast.

The wheel went around one full turn before Mr. Reinthaler pushed Ms. Waldmann off.

"He said he pushed the woman off, so she wouldn't get hurt, and rode the wheel to the top where he fell about 30 feet to the concrete pit beneath the wheel," Ranger Smith said.

Ms. Waldmann suffered a crushed leg, authorities said. She was in serious but stable condition yesterday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Mr. Reinthaler was treated at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace and released Monday.
