Man, 34, injured in 2-vehicle collision

June 21, 1995

A 34-year-old Glenelg man who apparently failed to yield the right-of-way on Route 97 in Glenwood was seriously injured yesterday after his vehicle was struck by a pickup truck and caught fire, Howard County police said.

Chanh Ackerman of the 4300 block of Heritage Hill Lane was listed in critical condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday.

The truck driver, Gregory Schmidt, 32, of Silver Spring, was treated and released at Montgomery County General, police said.

Traffic investigators said Mr. Ackerman attempted to turn his Isuzu Trooper left onto southbound Route 97 at 8:40 a.m. yesterday, but apparently did not yield the right-of-way to Mr. Schmidt's northbound Ford F250 truck.

The two vehicles collided, and Mr. Ackerman's caught fire. Rescue workers treated Mr. Ackerman for injuries at the scene before a state police MedEvac flew him to the Baltimore hospital, police said.

Traffic charges are pending against Mr. Ackerman, police said.
