Youth group taking sign-ups for soccer season

Are you afraid your child will have nothing to do after baseball, softball and T-ball? Have no fear, soccer will be here. Brooklyn Park Youth Athletic Association is accepting soccer registration

for this season. All boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 15 are invited to play. Registration is being accepted from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at the Sugar Shack on the 10th Avenue ball fields.

Fees are $30 for the first child, $50 for two or more children, plus a $10 concession fee. Spaces are limited, so register now. For more information, call 789-5352.

* The Brooklyn Park Youth Athletic Association will sponsor the Jack Conley All-Star Invitational Baseball/Softball Tournament from July 1 through July 13. To register, call Frank Shipley for baseball at 789-5352, or Wayne Combs softball and T-ball at 789-1947.

County schools have been closed for seven days and already the sound of children complaining that "There's nothing to do" are being heard. Have you thought about registering your child for the summer playground program sponsored by Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks? The program offers activities for boys and girls, ages 5 1/2 to 12. It will be held at Brooklyn Park Elementary School, 200 14th Avenue.

The playground will be open from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, June 26 through Aug. 4. Children must provide their own lunch and drink. The fee is $80 for one child, $70 for each additional child in a family.

"Solve Mysteries -- Read!" is the theme of the county public library's summer reading program, which runs from today through Aug. 4. It will be held at all branches, including the Brooklyn Park branch at 1 East 11th Ave. Children who register for the program will receive a free pass to the Baltimore Zoo.

The free, self-paced program is open to children who will be entering kindergarten through sixth grade this fall. Activities also are available for preschoolers. The Brooklyn Park Library will hold a celebration to launch the program at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Children can learn about the program and enjoy stories and other activities. * Middle school students are invited to volunteer to help with the summer program. Students will organize and distribute packets of materials, register children, stock the shelves and perform other duties. For more information, call 222-7371.

The Belle Grove Improvement Association announces that its June meeting has been canceled. Association members wish everyone a safe and happy summer and they hope to see you at the next meeting in September.
