Substance-free party for teens planned

Howard County Students Helping Other People (SHOP) will sponsor a substance-free block party for county teens from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Serenity Center parking lot at 10005 Old Columbia Road in the Village of Kings Contrivance.

The free party will have music and barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs. Entertainment will feature the bands Koan Fusion and Minas Tirith and disc jockey Warren the K.

SHOP is a peer leadership club in all county schools that promotes living without the use of alcohol, drugs or tobacco.

Funding was provided by a grant from the Columbia Foundation. Other sponsors include the Howard County Substance Abuse Partnership Forum, Howard County Substance Abuse Impact Coordinator and the Maryland Health Department. Information: 290-8152.

Tamar Drive traffic to be discussed

A meeting to discuss plans to slow traffic on Tamar Drive and Majors Lane will be held at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Jeffers Hill Elementary School cafeteria.

The meeting is sponsored by the Jeffers Hill PTA Safety Committee.

Ed Walter, chief of traffic engineering, and George Frangos, project manager, will present the plans.

Proposals include three raised intersections, a raised crosswalk

and five speed bumps.
