Narciso again in command at Baltimore championship

Charlie Narciso continued his stranglehold on the annual spring championship of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation Mount Pleasant Golf Course yesterday.

Narciso, the winner of this title the past three years, matched par with a first-round 36-3571 for the 6,750 yards, good for a two-stroke margin on Blair Laubach. Tim Osgood was another stroke back at 74, followed by a group of five at 75 that included Tony Narciso, father of the leader.

Tournament officials gave this 120-player field a taste of true championship conditions, with hard fairways, fast greens, and pins in tough positions. They turned out to be factors that separated the good players from the rest of the group.

The defender, who started on the back nine, dipped to 2-under par when he made the turn even and birdied Nos. 1 and 2.

He let three strokes slip away in the next four holes, then hit what he called "four really good shots in a row," which resulted in a par at the seventh and a birdie at the eighth.

Laubach reacted to the conditions with his best round in eight or nine years of area public links play. He highlighted his 36-37 round with birdies at the ninth and 10th.

Play will conclude today at Forest Park Golf Course, beginning at 7 a.m.
