National League -- Upheld a four-game suspension and fine imposed on Terry Pendleton of the Florida Marlins and announced it will begin today.

Orioles -- Traded P Brad Pennington to the Cincinnati Reds for two minor-leaguers, OF Danny Clyburn and P Tony Nieto. Optioned C Cesar Devarez to Triple-A Rochester.

Chicago Cubs -- Traded P Mike Morgan, IF-OF Paul Torres and C Francisco Morales to the St. Louis Cardinals for IF Todd Zeile and cash. Agreed to terms with Zeile on a one-year contract.

Cincinnati Reds -- Placed P Chuck McElroy on the 15-day DL, retroactive to June 7. Designated P Pete Smith for assignment.

Montreal Expos -- Activated IF Mike Lansing from the 15-day DL. Placed IF Tom Foley on the 15-day DL.

New York Yankees -- Recalled P Joe Ausanio from Triple-A Columbus. Optioned P Brian Boehringer to Columbus.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Activated P David West from the DL. Placed P Toby Borland on the 15-day DL, retroactive to June 15.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Fired manager Joe Torre and replaced him with player personnel director Mike Jorgensen. Purchased the contract of IF Chris Sabo from Triple-A Louisville.


New Hampshire College -- Named Deborah Reardon women's basketball coach.

D8 Oral Roberts -- Named Sonny Galloway baseball coach.


Arizona Cardinals -- Re-signed OL Joe Wolf to a one-year contract.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Released G Carlton Haselrig.

Edmonton Eskimos (CFL) -- Signed DB Corris Ervin.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL) -- Released FB Gerald Armstrong, CB Rodney Bruce and LB Shawn Prendergast.


St. Louis Blues -- Fired Mike Shanahan, chairman and chief executive officer. Named Jack Quinn chairman and chief executive officer.
