A couple of offbeat heroes appeared on the screen scene this spring -- in "Legend" and "The Marshal" -- and at least one will be back in the fall. Tonight you can meet both, one of them for perhaps the last time.

* "David Attenborough's Natural World" (8 p.m.-8:30 p.m., MPT, channels 22, 67) -- They plummet from on high and seem to "fly" under water to catch their prey. They are kingfishers, among the most unusual birds. PBS.

* "The Marshal" (8 p.m.-9 p.m., WMAR, Channel 2) -- Repeats of this often engaging series are airing this summer in the assigned fall time slot. Tonight, unconventional U.S. Marshal MacBride (Jeff Fahey) hooks up with the FBI to track down a bank robber with distinct physical features. ABC.

* "Legend" (9 p.m.-10 p.m., WNUV, Channel 54) -- Although announced as canceled last month, this clever historical series has some slim hope for survival, says co-star John de Lancie in a recent "open letter" to fans (and TV writers). The series stars Richard Dean Anderson as a mild author who often assumes the bolder persona of his character, Nicodemus Legend. It is getting a one-night-only opportunity to notch an audience, in the favorable time slot following the only UPN show that was renewed for the fall, "Star Trek: Voyager." UPN.

* "Murphy Brown" (9 p.m.-9:30 p.m., WJZ, Channel 13) -- He tells Murphy he's going to study painting in Spain, but we know Robert Pastorelli (as Eldin) really left the series in this repeat episode so he could star in his own show, "Double Rush." Anne Meara makes a guest appearance as Eldin's mother. (Now that "Double Rush" has been canceled, do you think Eldin will return?) CBS.

* "Murder Between Friends" (9 p.m.-11 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- Told in flashbacks from different viewpoints, this fact-based 1994 courtroom movie tries the case of two men suspected of murdering a woman. Timothy Busfield is a New Orleans prosecutor, and Stephen Lang and Martin Kemp are the suspected killers. NBC.

Cable

* "Biography: Baron Manfred von Richtofen" (8 p.m.-9 p.m., A&E Network) -- If wars had awards shows, the German flying ace from World War I would get a lifetime achievement honor. The nightly series explores the roots of the real pilot better known as the Red Baron.
