The Western Howard County Baseball/Softball Association Program donated $9,448 to the county school system Thursday to install safety fences and benches on fields at schools in the western portion of the county.

The donation was the largest by a community group in at least 10 years, said Patti Caplan, the school system's public information officer.

"This is a wonderful way for community groups to support the school system," said Susan J. Cook, the school board chairwoman, as she accepted the check on behalf of the schools. "Thank you."

The baseball/softball group -- which runs leagues for more than 1,500 young people in the western half of the county -- raised the money as part of a yearlong effort to improve the condition of the playing fields. Activities included a fund-raising dance and candy and picture sales.

The association said it hopes to raise a similar amount of money next year to continue improvements to baseball fields at county schools.
