LOS ANGELES -- With left-handed-hitting first baseman Henry Rodriguez out with a broken leg, the Montreal Expos are expressing interest in free agent Darryl Strawberry.

"I think one would have to have an interest in Darryl Strawberry, if he's healthy," general manager Kevin Malone said. "Because of the type of player he is, what he's accomplished, what he can do on the field."

It's how Strawberry spent his time off the field that cost him his past two jobs, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. Strawberry, who has 294 career home runs, remains under suspension until late this month for violating Major League Baseball's substance-abuse after-care guidelines. He also is under house arrest for a tax-evasion conviction, but would be allowed to play under terms of that sentence, once his drug suspension is lifted.
