Foreign-exchange student honored

The Educational Foundation for Foreign Study and its local exchange coordinator have honored Carsten Oehme of Germany, who attended Liberty High School this year.

Carsten will be recognized at Liberty High's graduation Saturday. He arrived in August and has been living with the Varakin family in Eldersburg.

At Liberty, he overcame cultural and language obstacles, joined the track team and performed community service. He will return home soon after graduation.

Fire Prevention Queen contestants sought

Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department is seeking young women ages 16 to 21 to participate in its annual Miss Sykesville Fire Prevention Queen contest.

Participants must live in the Fire Department's response area and be single. Contestants must have a knowledge of fire prevention.

The contest will be held June 23 during the firemen's carnival.

FIRE

* Eldersburg: Winfield investigated a smoke detector alert in a house on Viewpoint Court at 11:03 p.m. Sunday. Units were out 25 minutes.

Sykesville responded to investigate the report of a fire in the 6300 block of Georgetown Blvd. at 3:50 p.m. Saturday. They were out 20 minutes.

Sykesville, Gamber and Liberty Road of Baltimore County were dispatched to a stove fire in a house in the 1600 block of Brimfield Circle at 12:55 p.m. Saturday. Units were out 30 minutes.

* Gamber: Gamber responded to an auto fire in the 900 block of Wilda Drive at 9:53 a.m. Saturday. Units were out 45 minutes.

* Sykesville: Sykesville assisted Howard County at an auto fire on Interstate 70 near Route 97 at 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Units were out 15 minutes.
