Gas line accident evacuates 8 homes

Eight homes were evacuated Friday afternoon and a section of Waugh Chapel Road closed while Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. crews repaired a ruptured gas line, county police said yesterday.

A worker for Jones Intercable drilling under the sidewalk of the 800 block of Vacation Drive hit the gas line about 3:30 p.m. County firefighters evacuated nearby houses and county police closed Waugh Chapel Road for about 90 minutes, police said.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Woman hurts her head when she falls off car

A Baltimore woman suffered head injuries Friday evening when she fell from the trunk of a friend's car while the friend was driving around the parking lot of the Maryland Correctional Institute at Jessup, state police said.

Mary L. Hines, 23, of the 800 block of Lyndhurst Street was treated at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and released, police and hospital officials said. Her friend, Valerie Nixon, 35, of the 2100 block of Boyd Street in Baltimore, was charged with negligent driving.

Both women were visiting an inmate at Jessup. Ms. Hines was riding on the trunk of Ms. Nixon's Ford Tempo about 7:25 p.m. when she fell off, striking her head on the ground, police said.
