June 05, 1995|By Newsday

CHICAGO -- Colin Powell said over the weekend that the warm response he has received from audiences around the country has encouraged him "to do something in service to the nation. But what form that service takes, I don't know."

Answering questions from reporters, the retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff cagily and sometimes playfully declined to state whether he has presidential ambitions.

Mr. Powell, 58, who was in town for the American Booksellers Association convention, said he would decide about his future after he completes a promotional tour for his autobiography this fall.
