Three teams used the day's best scores to vault into the top three places, as the fifth annual Chesapeake Cup moved through the second round at Caves Valley Golf Club yesterday.

With play completed well ahead of a late afternoon rainstorm, Jerry Courville, of Norwalk, Conn., and Joe Sommers, of Stamford, Conn., used a 7-under-par 64 to fashion a 36-hole better-ball total of 133 for a one-stroke lead.

Jamie Crow of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Ed Gibstein of Great Neck, N.Y., combined for nine birdies in posting a 64--134. Craig Young of Alpharetta, Ga., and Bob Young, Atlanta, Ga., added a 66 to an opening 68, and joined them at 134.

First-day leaders Duke Delcher-Jim Taylor added a 70 to their 66, and were among five teams at 136. Of the top 10 pairings, five had lower scores and two equaled opening-round efforts.

O. Gordon Brewer, Valley Forge, Pa., and Ray Newsome, Winston-Salem, N.C., padded their lead in the Senior division, adding a 68 to an opening 69 for 137. Brewer, current U.S. Seniors titleholder, shot 5-under-par 31 on the front side (the team's second nine), including an eagle.

Today's final round, where both medal scores will count for each team, will mean a different mind-set for the players as every shot will count.

"I played better this time, but Joe kept us in it yesterday [Friday]," Courville said. A birdie at No. 10, their first hole, got Courville-Sommers going, and the former highlighted the round with an eagle-3 at the 535-yard 13th.
