June 02, 1995|By Buster Olney

The Orioles yesterday avoided arbitration with second baseman Bret Barberie, who signed a contract worth $958,750 for this season.

His hearing had been scheduled for Wednesday.

"We try to avoid the hearing if possible," said general manager Roland Hemond. "Obviously, we reached a satisfactory agreement."

Ben McDonald and Mike Mussina are the only unsigned Orioles. McDonald's arbitration hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Mussina's for June 22.
