Woman, child suffer minor injuries in crash

A woman and her 5-year-old son were treated for minor injuries at Carroll County General Hospital and released after their auto collided with a truck on Ridge Road at Braddock Road in Winfield early yesterday.

State police said Margaret Riddle, 47, of the 6500 block of Davis Road, Mount Airy, and her son Phillip were northbound, approaching Braddock Road on Route 27 about 7 a.m. when a southbound truck swerved across the center line into their path.

Officers said Charles W. Cornett Jr., 28, of the 600 block of Cornett Road, Sykesville, the driver of a 1991 International truck, said he lost his brakes as he tried to slow down to avoid hitting another car that was stopped to make a left turn onto Braddock Road. He told state police Tfc. Ira Click Jr. that he swerved left to miss the stopped vehicle, crossed the center line, collided with Mrs. Riddle's car and struck an embankment.
