Victim foils robbery attempt with can of Mace

A Long Reach village man foiled an attempted robbery when he brandished a can of Mace at his assailant Tuesday night, Howard County police reported.

Police said Charles Stiller, 30, of the 5700 block of Phelps Luck Drive was walking to the Long Reach village center on Tamar Drive with a companion when the pair was confronted by a man who was holding a weapon about 9:30 p.m.

The man jumped in front of the two victims and demanded their money. Mr. Stiller pulled out a can of Mace, and the man ran away. Mr. Stiller did not spray the weapon.

* Long Reach: Park 'N' Ride lot, Route 175 and Snowden River Parkway: A gray 1990 Buick with Maryland temporary plate 92118L was stolen between 6:30 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. Thursday.
