Atlanta Braves -- Optioned IF Mike Sharperson to Triple-A Richmond. Activated OF Ryan Klesko from the 15-day DL.
Houston Astros -- Sent C Roger Luce to extended spring training. Placed OF Phil Plantier (fractured right hand) on the 15-day DL. Purchased the contract of OF John Cangelosi from Triple-A Tucson.
Oakland Athletics -- Placed IF Mike Gallego (strained left arch) on the 15-day DL. Recalled IF Fausto Cruz from Triple-A Edmonton.
Pittsburgh Pirates -- The board of directors announced that the team has reached an agreement in principle to sell the major league club to cable television magnate John Rigas.
Texas Rangers -- Agreed to terms with C Ivan Rodriguez on a one-year contract. Acquired P Domingo Jean from the Houston Astros for C Roger Luce. Sent Jean to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
San Diego Padres -- Agreed to terms with P Andy Ashby on a one-year contract.
San Francisco Giants -- Reassigned P Isbel Cardona from Burlington of the Midwest League to extended spring training in Scottsdale, Ariz., and P Santos Hernandez from extended spring training to Burlington.
Basketball
Phoenix Suns -- Waived F Richard Dumas.
College
Goucher -- Named Joseph Ratcliff aquatics director and head coach of the men's and women's swim teams. He was assistant coach at UMBC the past four years.
Fresno State -- Named Danny Tarkanian, John Welch and Johnny Brown men's assistant basketball coaches.
Maryland -- Announced basketball F Brian Watkins has transferred to the school from Notre Dame. Named Jeffrey Rohrman assistant men's soccer coach. He spent last year as assistant coach of the women's soccer team at Navy.
Salisbury State -- Had three women's lacrosse players selected to the BRINE/IWLCA all-region team: senior D Nichole Clark (Fallston) to first team and senior A Flossy Owens and junior G Shawne Block to second team. Three baseball players were selected to the All-Capital Athletic Conference first team: C Bill Ewe, P Brian McClellan and DH Cable Miller (Joppa).
