Students concerned about school issues can tell local politicians how they feel as part of the Belle Grove Improvement Association's Speech Contest, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Belle Grove Elementary School. The 11 students in the contest get three to five minutes to speak on the topic of their choice. Trophies will be awarded to the top speakers. State Sen. Phil Jimeno, Del. Joan Cadden, Del. John Leopold, Councilman George Bachman and his wife, Anne, will preside as judges. Everyone is invited to come and applaud the student efforts.

Community members are invited to attend the Olde Brooklyn Park Improvement Association meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brooklyn Park Elementary School, 200 14th Ave. Jim Harley from the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works will be the guest speaker. Other local officials also will be in attendance. This is the last meeting before summer break.

Don't forget to mark Thursday, May 18, on your calendar for the final media-sponsored skate party at Skate City II in Crofton. Skating will take place from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Admission is $2.50. Skate rental is $1.25. Free punch and cookies will be served. Bus transportation will not be available from Brooklyn Park Elementary School.

North County High School's band and chorus will perform a Spring Concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school auditorium. A donation of $1 per person would be appreciated.
The school's Senior Awards Assembly will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium. All seniors and parents are invited to attend.
Congratulations to the Varsity Cheerleaders for being the only Maryland school to bring home a trophy from the Eastern Cheerleading Association Finals in Williamsburg, Va. Theresa Wheatley and Carrie Neal also were selected to cheer in the 1996 Hula Bowl.
Tryouts for the 1995-1996 Varsity and Junior Varsity . teams will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday in the gymnasium.
Congratulations also go to the band crew on their outstanding success in Atlanta this past weekend. The judges gave excellent ratings to performances by the concert band, marching band, jazz band, pom-pom squad, flag squad and solo twirler Shannon Boyer. The marching band received a second-place trophy for their parade performance. The concert band received a third-place trophy and the pom-pom squad took a first-place trophy.
In addition, the flag squad, pom-pom squad and twirler received a most outstanding award for their parade performance. Band member Todd Kelch received a special award for outstanding jazz soloist. The band competed with groups from 12 states.

Officer Randy Gann, of the Anne Arundel County Police Department, will be the guest speaker at the Brooklyn Park Senior Nutrition Site at the Brooklyn Park Library. The event will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. His presentation will be entitled "Personal Safety and Security." For more information, call 222-6842.
