Arthur Lubin, 96, the Hollywood director whose more than 6 credits ranged from the lush 1943 remake of "Phantom of the Opera" to "Francis the Talking Mule" and its spinoff, the "Mr. Ed" television series, died Thursday at Autumn Hills nursing home in Glendale, Calif.

Giorgio Belladonna, 72, one of the greatest bridge players of all time, died Friday of cancer in Rome. He was ranked first by the World Bridge Federation based on a long career that included a record 16 world team championship victories. In 1956, he joined Italy's Blue Team, which became the most famous in the history of the game. With Walter Avarelli he played his own bidding method, the Roman System.
