Threat of rain forces delay in annual Flower Mart for 1 day

May 10, 1995|By From Staff Reports

The threat of rain forced the postponement of the 79th Flower Mart, which was scheduled for today at War Memorial Plaza downtown.

The festival, a spring event held by the Women's Civic League, was rescheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow in the plaza, across from City Hall.

The Flower Mart -- a festival of geraniums and crab cakes and lemons garnished with peppermint sticks -- traditionally has been held the first Wednesday in May. But after bad weather last year left the league with a $1,000 loss, organizers decided to schedule the mart a week later and provide a rain date.

War Memorial Plaza is a new site for the mart, which except for a few years in the 1970s had been held around the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon.

In deference to a need for profits -- used to maintain a historic building at 9 N. Front St. -- the event was moved to attract a larger crowd.
