Loyola's depth dunks Calvert Hall in 12-6 win

Too deep. Too athletic.

That was Mike Thomas' conclusion after watching his Calvert Hall team bow to No. 3 Loyola, 12-6, in yesterday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference regular-season finale at Blakefield.

Even the most loyal of Cardinals fans would have to agree with him.

When it was over, eight Loyola players had scored with senior attackman J. L. Reppert leading the way with two goals and two assists.

Loyola's first midfield unit of Scott Diggs, Tim Hahn and Brian Zeller accounted for five goals and three assists. Hahn and Zeller each had two goals and one assist and Diggs, who won 14 of 20 faceoffs, added one goal and an assist.

"I would have liked to have seen us handle the ball better offensively and I think it would have made for an easier game, but you can't take it away from Calvert Hall, because they play to their strengths and they never give up," said Loyola coach Joe McFadden. "Now is the time. There's no more chance to work the kinks out. If the kinks aren't worked out now, they aren't going to get worked out."

Loyola scored three goals in each quarter and Calvert Hall managed to keep up in the first, but could only muster single goals in each of the last three periods.

The Cardinals (11-4, 6-4) scored first on a one-hopper by Greg Patchak (one goal, two assist) and went up 3-2 with under two minutes left in the first quarter on a goal by Ryan Lachowicz. Diggs tied the game seven seconds later when he won the faceoff, faked a pass to a teammate on the wing and gunned one into the upper left corner of the net.

Loyola (12-2, 8-2) took the lead for good just 25 seconds into the second quarter on an unassisted goal by junior attackman Dave Cummings.

The Cardinals cut the lead to one on a loose-ball goal by Jerry Schiavino with 5:55 left in the half but that goal was matched a minute later by Zeller on a feed from Reppert.

Loyola strung together three straight goals to start the third quarter and was up 9-4 after the first of two goals by senior attackman Jason Rickel.

Calvert Hall closed out the third-quarter scoring and then scored first in the fourth quarter before the Dons strung together their last three goals.

* McDonogh 5, Gilman 4: Brad MacHammer and Bert Dudley each scored two goals leading McDonogh to an upset over visiting and No. 2 Gilman (11-3).

Dudley scored both his goals and MacHammer added one as the Eagles (9-9) led 3-1 after the first quarter. The lead held for the remainder of the first half.

Lorne Smith scored for the Greyhounds to pull Gilman to within 3-2 in the third quarter, but Andy Hood scored to give McDonogh a two-goal lead. Smith scored again for Gilman, making the score 4-3, but the Eagles responded again in the final period as MacHammer scored. Smith scored his third straight goal for Gilman pulling it to within 5-4.

Tom Layden had two assists for McDonogh and Art Chen had 14 saves.
