WELCOME BACK

May 02, 1995|By San Francisco Chronicle

If there is any doubt that major-league baseball is scrambling to win back fans, consider what is in store for the Oakland Athletics' opening night crowd Friday.

A's players in uniform will greet fans at the turnstiles to welcome them back after the 7 1/2 -month strike. After shaking hands, each fan will get a free calendar and then sit back for a mariachi and dance performance on the field to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Manager Tony La Russa will take the field microphone to welcome everyone back to the Coliseum.

Tagged on to all this activity will be the game with the Texas Rangers, followed by a "pyro-spectacular" fireworks show.
