5-0 run gets No. 2 Syracuse by No. 11 UMass, 13-7

AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore attackman Rob Kavovit had two goals and one assist yesterday to lead No. 2 Syracuse to a 13-7 victory over No. 11 Massachusetts before 4,176 at Garber Field. The Orangemen (10-2) ended the season with eight straight wins and have virtually clinched a first-round bye in the NCAA tournament.

Nick Licamelli, Casey Powell, Roy Colsey and Paul Carcaterra each scored two goals.

The Minutemen (6-4), who have games at Brown and Army, have slim chances at the NCAA tournament.

Mike Valente's goal at 6:16 of the first quarter put Massachusetts ahead 3-1. Syracuse then had five players score in a 5-0 run that gave it a 6-3 lead 9:47 before halftime.

The Minutemen closed to 9-7 on a goal by Valente with 7:42 left in the game. The Orangemen then scored the final four goals, including two in extra-man situations.

Massachusetts was scoreless in eight man-up opportunities. Syracuse outshot the Minutemen 53-33 and held a 70-43 ground ball edge.
