Al Cesky Scholarship Nominees

April 30, 1995

Beginning today and continuing on each of the next two Sundays, the Baltimore Sun will publish some of the accomplishments of nominees for the 10th annual Al Cesky Scholarship Fund awards, as selected by the 11 secondary schools in Harford County. Two overall winners, one boy and one girl, will be chosen May 17 at the awards banquet at the Richlin Ballroom in Edgewood.

Suzanne Akers

School: Harford Christian

Sports: Field hockey, basketball, softball

Highlights: She was a four-year starter in field hockey and softball, and a senior co-captain in both, plus basketball, where she holds the school record for career assists. An honor roll student for every quarter since first grade, she has received several national academic awards and stands second in her class. She will attend UMBC.

Rebecca Baldwin

School: Aberdeen

Sports: Field hockey, tennis

Highlights: Co-captain of the field hockey team as a senior and ranks ninth in a class of 227. She is a member of several national honor societies, a member of the All-County band, and active in student government. She is a volunteer for Special Olympics and tutoring. Undecided on college choice.

Anthony Belcastro

School: Bel Air

Sports: Football, basketball, baseball

Highlights: A senior captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams, he was the first-team All-County quarterback and led the county in touchdown passes the last two years; was a starting guard in basketball and a starting outfielder in baseball. He stands 24th in a class of 303; is a National Honor Society member; and active in student government. Last year, he attended Maryland Boy's State and the University of Maryland's Leadership Workshop. He holds the rank of Life Scout. He will attend the University of Maryland.

Janine DeBellis

School: C. Milton Wright

Sport: Field hockey

Highlights: Co-captain of the field hockey team, she was a second-team All-County selection as a goalkeeper. She ranks 22nd in a class of 290, and is a National Honor Society member. In addition to being active in school and community service groups, she teaches Spanish and tutors in math. She will attend James Madison University.

Erin Fitzgerald

School: Harford Tech

Sports: Cross country, track and field

Highlights: Chosen her school's outstanding female athlete as a junior, she is a four-year captain/co-captain of the cross country/track teams. Named to the All-County band, orchestra and chorus this year, she is active in several youth groups and is this year's student member of the Harford County Board of Education. Undecided on college choice.

Michael Giordano

School: John Carroll

Sports: Soccer, track and field

Highlights: He was a four-year starter in soccer and captained the track and soccer teams. Ranking seventh in a class of 145, he is vice president of the senior class and active as a volunteer in church and community activities. Undecided on college choice, although he has received several scholarship offers.

Paul Konschak

School: North Harford

Sports: Football, wrestling

Highlights: As a senior, he was first-team All-County in football and wrestling, and the county's Co-Wrestler of the Year. He ranks 29th in a class of 234, is a National Honor Society member, and is active in school clubs and student government.
