25 Years Ago (Week of April 19-25, 1970)

* Howard County Executive Omar Jones proposed an operating budget of $19,309,223 for the county. This constituted a 28 percent increase over the current budget. 50 Years Ago (Week of April 22-28, 1945):

* A competitive paper drive for Howard County public schools was announced by the salvage division of the War Production Board in conjunction with the Howard County Salvage Committee. All types of used paper were in demand for recycling to compensate for wartime shortages. * Two Howard County residents, Charles Slade and Ellsworth Bosian, were awarded $75 by the Post Suggestion Committee at Camp Meade for their invention of a combination screen and storm door for use on camp buildings.
